History: ATOM was created in 1974 by a group of law enforcement professionals who determined that there was a need for quality training for all Minnesota police departments. These individuals all volunteered to serve on the board and developed and taught training in the areas of use of force, professional development, hostage negotiation and personal development. Fast forward to 1991, the board contracted with Darlyne Erickson to manage the business of the association, and in 1993 applied and received a 501C3 Non-profit status.
It is difficult to determine how many police officers have been trained, but our electronic records show that since 2002 we have facilitated the training for 9100 individuals, which equates to innumerable hours. From 1991-2003 we can estimate another 4800 individuals trained, and from 1974 to 1991, it’s impossible to say how many walked through the doors of ATOM training.
Suffice it to say that ATOM, with the support of the many individuals who have voluntarily served on the Board of Directors over the years, has made a substantial impact on law enforcement training in Minnesota.
